New data reveals confronting truths about workplace sexual harassment
In our latest Index Insights, we explore worker experiences of sexual harassment and, in partnership with Our Watch, provide practical guidance on being an active bystander. We asked workers if in the past 12 months:
- they had experienced sexual harassment at work
- who it came from
- their employer’s response to it
- if their workplace had any recognised risks for sexual harassment.
The findings show 18% of workers experienced sexual harassment at work in the 12 months prior to the survey. Just as alarming were the workplace responses to cases of sexual harassment: |

These Index Insights are part of an in-depth report on inclusion at work as a protective factor against sexual harassment, coming 26 August 2026. |
Knowing isn't enough: taking action on sexual harassment |
Employers drive systemic change, but everyone has a role in calling out and preventing sexual harassment at work.
Being an Active Bystander is DCA and Our Watch’s resource on how to interrupt, de-escalate and prevent sexual harassment at work, and how to support targets of sexual harassment. |

Three ways workplaces can prevent harm by supporting bystander action |
Bystander action is critical in identifying and addressing sexual harassment in the workplace, but it shouldn't shift responsibility from employers who are accountable for the safety of their people.
That responsibility includes creating a workplace where employees feel safe and supported to speak up. Bystander action is only effective in an environment where raising concerns is encouraged, taken seriously, and free from risk of negative consequences. Alisha Taylor-Jones (she/they), Workplace Implementation Lead at Our Watch, shares insights and practical ways workplaces can support bystander action. |

How is your workplace marking National Reconciliation Week? |
National Reconciliation Week (NRW) is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation. Held annually from 27 May – 3 June, NRW commemorates two significant milestones in Australia’s reconciliation journey: the successful 1967 referendum and the High Court’s Mabo decision.
The theme for National Reconciliation Week 2026 is 'All In', a call for all Australians to commit wholeheartedly to reconciliation every single day. We encourage you to explore the official NRW Calendar to find events across Australia, including cultural performances, community gatherings, panel discussions, and more.
Hosting an NRW event that’s open to the public? Don’t forget to add it to the official calendar! |
