DCA’s latest research shows class bias still impacts who gets ahead and who is left behind
DCA is excited to today launch our new report, Class Inclusion at Work. The research helps organisations understand class inequality in the workplace, identify barriers, and take action to ensure their workplaces foster class inclusion. |
| |
“At a time of rising cost-of-living pressures, skills shortages and economic uncertainty, organisations that allow class to influence hiring not only entrench disadvantage, they risk overlooking valuable talent that can boost productivity and drive recovery." |
- Catherine Hunter (she/her), CEO, Diversity Council Australia |
Class inclusion benefits both employees and organisations. Research shows class inclusive workplaces are more profitable and innovative, with higher employee engagement and retention, and stronger customer service and brand reputation. Importantly, class marginalised employees in inclusive organisations report greater wellbeing, job satisfaction and access to career development. The research provides employers with an evidence-based framework to understand and address class inequality in the workplace.

Is your organisation building a carer-friendly workplace? |
Creating a carer-friendly workplace and policies strengthen both workforce sustainability and organisational culture. National Carers Week (12-18 October) is an opportunity for organisations to reflect on the invisible labour that sustains families, communities, and the economy. It is also a call to action. By recognising the unique challenges of working carers, and implementing carer-friendly policies, employers can help ensure that no one is forced to choose between caring for a loved one and pursuing their career.
In a blog for DCA, Elena Katrakis, CEO, Carers NSW highlights the challenges carers face and practical steps workplaces can take to become carer friendly. |

How we can address ageism and increase productivity |
In recognition of the International Day of Older Persons on 1 October, Robert Fitzgerald AM (he/him), Age Discrimination Commissioner at the Australian Human Rights Commission and Catherine Hunter, CEO of the Diversity Council Australia recently published an opinion piece in Women’s Agenda.
As Australia’s population ages and our working lives extend, ageing with dignity is now a workplace issue. Including and retaining older workers through flexibility and inclusive leadership delivers measurable economic returns. |

The State of Reconciliation in Australia |
On 24 September, DCA was honoured to host Karen Mundine (she/her), CEO of Reconciliation Australia, at a recent First Nations Insights event where she shared insights from the 2024 Australian Reconciliation Barometer (ARB) and the 2024 Workplace Reconciliation Barometer (WRB). This was followed by a panel discussion on the next steps organisations can take for meaningful reconciliation. |

DCA’s Inclusion at Work Week (IAWW) takes place from 17-21 November. IAWW is an annual, week-long national celebration of D&I in Australian workplaces where we invite DCA members and non-member organisations to participate and share their D&I journeys and progress. We encourage you to register to take part.
DCA is offering IAWW participants the chance to attend Knowledge Programs usually reserved for group bookings only. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to increase your knowledge, skills, and awareness around diversity and inclusion topics with three incredible programs on offer: D&I Fundamentals, Preventing Gendered Violence at Work, and Inclusive Leadership.
| |
D&I Fundamentals explains diversity and inclusion and their importance in the workplace by exploring diversity dimensions, core concepts, and inclusion literacy. |
| This training program, in partnership with Our Watch, will explore the prevention of gendered violence in the workplace, with a focus on sexual harassment. |
| This program will outline DCA’s Inclusive Leadership model, explore what it means to be an inclusive leader, and discuss how to apply inclusive leadership values in your workplace. |

Are you ready for gender equality targets? |
| In March 2025 amendments were made to the Workplace Gender Equality Act 2012 requiring employers with 500 or more employees to select and meet or demonstrate improvement against gender equality targets.
The Workplace Gender Equality Agency (WGEA) has resources to help employers assess their data, set targets, and create action plans. Visit the WGEA Targets Hub. |
