Creating truly inclusive parental leave policies for LGBTQ+ families
|
Ashley Scott is Executive Officer and Co-founder of Rainbow Families, a charity that supports, connects and empowers LGBTQ+ parents and their families. In this blog, Ashley shares his thoughts on what is needed to create more inclusive parental leave policies for LGBTQ+ families, and how the interpretation and application of policies is a crucial component.

"For example, if fostering, adoption, or surrogacy aren’t specifically mentioned in a parental leave policy, managers might mistakenly think the policy doesn’t apply to those cases. LGBTQ+ employees are then put in the difficult position of having to educate their managers or advocate for themselves at a time when they should be focused on preparing for a new child."

Final report released on Early Childhood Education and Care
|
DCA supports the Productivity Commission's recommendations outlined in the recently released report on Early Childhood Education and Care (ECEC). This report aligns with our vision for universal access to high-quality, inclusive early childhood education and care for every child in Australia including First Nations families, LGBTIQ+ families, families in rural and remote locations, people from culturally and linguistically diverse communities and households with complex needs and people with disability.
We strongly support increasing the childcare subsidy for low-income families and scrapping the activity test, which disproportionately impacts single mothers, First Nations families, and low-income households. Additionally, raising wages for ECEC workers, who are predominantly women, is crucial for ensuring a sustainable, high-quality workforce and advancing gender equality.
DCA has long advocated for reimagining Australia’s ECEC system to make it universally accessible. Read our submissions on the Productivity Commission’s Inquiry into Early Childhood Education and Care (May 2023) and the ACCC’s Interim Report (October 2023).

This year’s theme, Sign Up for Sign Language Rights, focuses on advancing linguistic human rights, particularly in everyday environments such as the workplace. In our new blog, Sherrie Beaver, Manager of Grants & Projects at Expression Australia, explores how organisations can foster inclusive, bilingual environments to support Deaf and hard of hearing employees.
